I live in the midwest and would like to know what I can do now for preparing next springs Gardening. Would it be wise to dig up areas now for planting in spring? Also, what perennials are good for Wisconsin?

I now live in St. Louis, but lived in Minnesota for 5 years, and whatever you are going to do you should have a plan executed by the endof October! I would stake out the area(s) you can use pegs and string, remove all grass(It’s just a thing I have about it coming back) and til the areas, dig at least 6-8 inches down, and loosen the dirt really well. Don’t worry about lumps and all, you can let the area sit over the winter, the gorund will be ready to plant in Spring.
my zone for planting in StL is 5, and I know you can plant alot of things under zone 5. You will want to watch your areas for amount of sun and shade as most perennials are pretty particular to those specifics. Full sun means at least 6 hours….part sun is anything less than that. You can spend the winter planning your flowers so you don’t "impulse" buy! You can plan your colors, heights, textures, and blooming times. It would be fun to draw it out on paper. There are alot of gardening sites and plant shopping sites that have great info. Some of your plants can be ordered on line and you can save money and time. This may be alot more than what you were wanting to do, and you can modify it. The most important thing for success is knowing your plants and that comes from research.

I am moving and will have roommates. I am bringing my two year old cat. They do not want him to go on the furniture. He is used to going onto the Furniture at my apartment that I am moving out of. Is there a spray or something I could use on the furniture that will not harm the furniture (from suede type couches to wooden things)? I don’t have the heart to spray him with water as he is very skittish. Thanks!

I trained all three of my cats not jump on counters or furniture by using double sided tape for a couple of weeks, and it works and does not hurt them in any way, they don’t like the stickeyness of the tape and then jump down, I have also used a spray bottle with water and this works too. I also put the double-sided tape on my couch corners just to keep it protected but it also deters them from using their claws to tear it up.

My cat is 1 year old, he’s a male and he weighs 12.2 lbs. He looks slightly overweight because he has a gut that hangs down around his waist. I want him to lose weight but dont know what portions of food to feed him. Currently I feed him a half a can of wet food and 1/2 cup of dry food every day, broken up into 4 meals. Am I overfeeding him? How much should I be feeding him?
The size can I give him is 5.5 oz.

There is NO such thing as dry "diet" food for cats. Dry foods are filled with carbs that make your cat fat. You can’t make a dry food without carbs, so there are no dry diet foods.

The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it Healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

I am preparing to graduate college in may of 2008 and I am wondering what a 1st year Finance major can expect there first year out. I have a 3+ GPA and I want to become and investment banker, any suggestions would be welcomed. My area of finance is corporate finance.

It really depends on the field you’re going in, whether it’s sales or operations, with a mixture of bonuses and commission.

If it’s operations (such as backoffice of a financial institution) the starting wage can be mid 40’s to mid 50’s. With this field there’s no risk of losing money since you’re not depending on sales and so forth, but the tradeoff is that you’re only extra incentive comes from quarterly or year-end bonuses. Usually there’s little to no commission at all.

And of course with sales the potential to make money is unlimited. It really depends on where you’re going to start in. If it’s in banking, like myself, you’ll get a mid-range salary plus commission and bonuses. Or you can do the 100% commission route, which doesn’t start off bad, like for example at UBS they’ll pay your first year at $65,000, but after that it’s 100% commission, and if you don’t have $3 million in sales generated by the end of the first year then the tradeoof is that you’re let go. (I wonder about the $80,000 figure that was quoted in another blurb above and whether or not it has to do with the UBS example. I haven’t heard of anybody starting right away at $80,000, even with a Master’s.)

So all in all operations you’re looking at mid forties to mid fifties, sales it all depends on how much of a factor commission is.

Hope this helps.

You are the marketing manager for a leading coffee chain. Your company has made the decision to expand internationally, specifically into China. What are some of the environmental factors that you will need to consider in marketing your coffee in China? Which of one of these factors would have the largest impact on the company’s marketing strategy? Why?

Environmental scanning usually refers just to the macro environment, but it can also include industry and competitor analysis, consumer analysis, product innovations, and the company’s internal environment. Macro environmental scanning involves analysing:

* The Economy
o GNP or GDP per capita
o economic growth
o unemployment rate
o inflation rate
o consumer and investor confidence
o inventory levels
o currency exchange rates
o merchandise trade balance
o financial and political health of trading partners
o balance of payments
o future trends
* Government
o political climate – amount of government activity
o political stability and risk
o government debt
o budget deficit or surplus
o corporate and personal tax rates
o payroll taxes
o import tariffs and quotas
o export restrictions
o restrictions on international financial flows
* Legal
o minimum wage laws
o environmental protection laws
o worker safety laws
o union laws
o copyright and patent laws
o anti- monopoly laws
o Sunday closing laws
o municipal licences
o laws that favour business investment
* Technology
o efficiency of infrastructure, including: roads, ports, airports, rolling stock, hospitals, education, healthcare, communication, etc.
o industrial productivity
o new manufacturing processes
o new products and services of competitors
o new products and services of supply chain partners
o any new technology that could impact the company
o cost and accessibility of electrical power
* Ecology
o ecological concerns that affect the firms production processes
o ecological concerns that affect customers’ buying habits
o ecological concerns that affect customers’ perception of the company or product
* Socio-Cultural
o demographic factors such as:
+ population size and distribution
+ age distribution
+ education levels
+ income levels
+ ethnic origins
+ religious affiliations
o attitudes towards:
+ materialism, capitalism, free enterprise
+ individualism, role of family, role of government, collectivism
+ role of church and religion
+ consumerism
+ environmentalism
+ importance of work, pride of accomplishment
o cultural structures including:
+ diet and nutrition
+ housing conditions
* Potential Suppliers
o Labour supply
+ quantity of labour available
+ quality of labour available
+ stability of labour supply
+ wage expectations
+ employee turn-over rate
+ strikes and labour relations
+ Educational facilities
o Material suppliers
+ quality, quantity, price, and stability of material inputs
+ delivery delays
+ proximity of bulky or heavy material inputs
+ level of competition among suppliers
o Service Providers
+ quantity, quality, price, and stability of service facilitators
+ special requirements
* Stakeholders
o Lobbyists
o Shareholders
o Employees
o Partners

Scanning these macro environmental variables for threats and opportunities requires that each issue be rated on two dimensions. It must be rated on its potential impact on the company, and rated on its likeliness of occurrence. Multiplying the potential impact parameter by the likeliness of occurrence parameter gives us a good indication of its importance to the firm.

I’ve recently been considering applying to grad school (at UW in the photography program) which got me wondering if my B.F.A is enough to teach at a high school level. Would a M.F.A in photo allow me to teach at a college level or are they a fair number of Education classes required as well?

teaching at the high school level isn’t difficult you just need to get your license from the state.

For making my Home-made macaroni m cheese – what should I use to coat the pasta – double cream or single cream? I used double before and it tasted really good, but dont know the difference between the two for cooking purposes.

Double is thicker with a higher fat content.

im starting a company and i will be designing people landscapes around their Homes, just wanted to know if there is any other computer software that would help me better then the one i already have

I used Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer and thought it was a great program. It actually had a lot more stuff than I really needed but I still use it to look up different types of plants every time I get the urge to plant something new.

It’s pretty easy to use.
