A travel portal needs a website but how the airlines, hotels, cruises, buses, rails are linked. Is it GDS or linking of individual airlines websites, etc. I need more information on this

They are linked through affiliate links. You go to the websites and sign up to become an affiliate. Lets pretend you want to make links on your website to travelocity flights for airlines….so you go to travelocity.com and look at the bottom of the website. You will see the words "affiliate program" in small letters. Like this: http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w106/JordanPar23/Travelocity.png
Click on that to sign up. Once you sign up, travelocity would give you links for whatever flights you need links for. They may even have links that self update if you want a website that updates itself. So if you want to promote hotels, find a hotel affiliate…check hotel.com…look at the bottom of their page for the words "affiliate" and sign up with them if you want to promote hotels….this is how you do it. Just sign up for affiliates, choose what you want to link to, get the links, and put the links on your site. Then you have to log in to the seperate websites to see how much money you are making. If you sign up for travelocity and hotels.com for example, you will have to sign in to both of them to see how much you have made for each.

In the 5 branches of the military (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard), what are the science related jobs, if any, in each branch? Also, if there are any, are they enlisted or officer jobs?

there are enlisted and officer in all fields. take a look at each branch’s website to read more about jobs. the navy and air force both are heavy in engineering and science, although the army also has a lot of civil engineering.

air force for example has the developmental engineering field which is basically their R&D field. They also have a scientist field (i forget the exact name) which is more about chemical engineering. my point is that all branches will need all types of engineering and Science disciplines. just go to the websites and read up on the jobs. then you can go to http://usmilitary.about.com and you can read more detailed descriptions of each job.

as far as your decision on whether you want to be an officer or not. if you have a degree, become an officer. nothing wrong with being an enlisted person, they work their butts off, but you went to college presumably to make more money and have more of a mangement position as opposed to a technician position, and that’s the difference between officer and enlisted.

I’m torn between two professions, one is teaching the second is Retail management. I will be earning my bachelors degree in Psychology at the end of this year, so I am looking foward to starting my career in either of these professions. Can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of retail management and teaching? Thank you in advance for your answers.

I was in retail (not management) and am now a teacher. In my opinion, teaching is a far more rewarding career. However, it is also more demanding. Despite the time off, it is a career that you cannot leave at work. While a retail management job may end at 5pm, I occasionally grade papers until 12 midnight and brainstorm my lesson plans in the shower. If you are interested in having a family or have other commitments, teaching will be a bit harder. If you want to go for the rewarding profession and take on the extra hours of work, go for it.

I want to sell some prints of my photography. I put some on Etsy and haven’t gotten any responses or even any views yet. Have any of you ever sold your photography? How much did you sell it for and where? Was it successful? Do you know a good place to buy the protective sheets and cardboard backing for a pretty good deal? Any advice for selling photography prints would be greatly appreciated.

A good starting reference for how to sell your Photography is "Sell & Resell Your Photos" by Ron Engh. It’s published by Writer’s Digest Books. Although it’s mostly about stock photography, Engh covers other markets for your photography as well. You might be able to find copies of this book at your local library; your local bookstore; or at Amazon.com. You can also go to Engh’s website www.photosource.com.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) also puts out various publications on how, where and for how much to sell your photographs. Their website is www.asmp.org.

In "Sell & Resell Your Photos" Engh also lists suppliers where you can get the protective sheets and other supplies you would need.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you!

I’m 14 years old and in the 8th grade, it’s always been a goal of mine to have a career in Marine life and Animals.
I want to know what education do I need to work at a zoo or aquarium.

What kind of job do you want? It just depends. If you are just looking for a job during school, most likely you will need to apply for a volunteer position since you don’t even have a degree yet. When I had to do some volunteer work, I had to apply for their volunteer program and that included writing a short entry on why I am interested in working for the zoo, what are my hobbies, how do I plan to help, etc. And I had to do it a few weeks in advance, since it has to be reviewed and they get lots of them. Go look up what zoo you want to work for and get their application from them. Usually you can also let them know what time schedule works out best for you.

If you want to know about what kinds of degrees or programs you need for a certain feild, they all have their own requirements. Here are some of the areas of work you can get at a zoo: marketing/communications, Care Taker, Zookeeper, Mammal Keeper, Marine Animal Internships, Horticulture internships, vetrenarian, Diver Officer/Volunteer Diver Supervisor, HVAC Mechanic, Education Intern, Aquarist, Play Program Facilitator, Bird Programs, Animal Trainers, Medical Records/Animal Registrar.

There are a ton of jobs available at zoos since it takes so many people and programs to keep it running. A Zoo isn’t just a place to visit animals, there are many many things it does behind the scenes. Some places care for animals and send them back to their Homes, some breed, some places protect them, do research studies, and zoos also provide services for other organizations such as marine life research and tagging.

So all of these are jobs that you could do and each has their own education standards like Marine Biology for the aquarium jobs, Botany for the plant-life and Horticulture, Engineering for the technician jobs, Inter-Personal Communications for the marketing jobs, etc. First decide what job you want, then see what education that career requires.

My family is planning a vacation for next summer and our travel agent suggested we get travel cancellation and interruption insurance- is it really necessary?

My decision on getting Travel insurance is always predicated on how much I’ve spent for the trip and how much I’d be willing to lose. Travel insurance is generally not expensive compared to the cost of any given trip, but some people just don’t want to pay for it.

However, imagine your vacation being interrupted due to a cancelled flight… or maybe you lose your luggage and have to buy some things until they locate it, etc… Travel insurance can reimburse you.

Always check to see what’s included in the plans as they are all different. Mom and I had planned a trip to Thailand and then the airport was closed due to a demonstration. The insurance would have covered that because it was the airport’s decision to close… contrast with travel to Tibet being closed off by the Chinese government due to civil unrest… for some reason that wouldn’t have been covered by the same policy.

What does "daily exposure to digital technologies" mean, and what can it alter?

Does daily use of digital gadgets rewire brains?
A person’s social skills can decline, psychiatrist says
By MALCOLM RITTER
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — What does a teenage brain on Google look like? Do all those hours spent online rewire the circuitry? Could these kids relate better to emoticons than to real people?

While violent video games have gotten a lot of public attention, some current concerns go well beyond that. Some professionals think the wired world may be changing the way we read, learn and interact with each other.

There are no firm answers yet. But Dr. Gary Small, a psychiatrist at UCLA, argues that daily exposure to digital Technologies such as the Internet and smart phones can alter how the brain works.

When the brain spends more time on technology-related tasks and less time exposed to other people, it drifts away from fundamental social skills such as reading facial expressions during conversation, Small asserts.

So brain circuits involved in face-to-face contact can become weaker, he suggests. That may lead to social awkwardness, an inability to interpret nonverbal messages, isolation and less interest in traditional classroom learning.

Small says the effect is strongest in so-called digital natives — people in their teens and 20s who have been "digitally hard-wired since toddlerhood." He thinks it’s important to help the digital natives improve their social skills and older people — digital immigrants — improve their technology skills.

At least one 19-year-old Internet enthusiast gives Small’s idea a mixed review. John Rowe, who lives near Pasadena, Calif., spends six to 12 hours online a day. He flits from instant messaging his friends to games such as Cyber Nations and Galaxies Ablaze to online forums for game players and disc jockeys.

Social skills? Rowe figures he and his buddies are doing just fine in that department, thank you. But he thinks Small may have a point about some other people he knows.

"If I didn’t actively go out and try to spend time with friends, I wouldn’t have the social skills that I do," said Rowe, who reckons he spends three or four nights a week out with his pals.

More than 2,000 years ago, Socrates warned about a different information revolution — the rise of the written word, which he considered a more superficial way of learning than the oral tradition. More recently, the arrival of television sparked concerns that it would make children more violent or passive and interfere with their education.

Small, who describes his modern-day concerns in a new book called "iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind," acknowledges he doesn’t have an open-and-shut case that digital technology is changing brain circuitry.

Still, his argument is "pretty interesting and certainly provocative," although difficult to prove, says brain scientist Tracey Shors of Rutgers University.

Others are skeptical. Robert Kurzban, a University of Pennsylvania psychologist, said scientists still have a lot to learn about how a person’s experiences affect the way the brain is wired for social interaction.

Life in the age of Google may even change how we read. Normally, as a child learns to read, the brain builds pathways that gradually allow for more sophisticated analysis and comprehension, says Maryanne Wolf of Tufts University, author of "Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain."

She calls that analysis and comprehension "deep reading." But that takes time, even if it’s just a fraction of a second, and today’s wired world is all about speed, gathering a lot of superficial information fast.

Wolf asks what will happen as young children do more and more early reading online. Will their brains respond by short-circuiting parts of the normal reading pathways that lead to deeper reading but which also take more time? And will that harm their ability to reflect on what they’ve read?

Those questions deserve to be studied, Wolf says. She thinks kids will need instruction tailored to gaining reading comprehension in the digital world.

Rowe, the 19-year-old, said he and his buddies often debate whether technology might actually be bad for you. That includes kicking around the argument that computer use makes people socially inept.

But, he added, "We spend a lot of time on the computer and still have totally normal and perfect social lives."

If a terrorist group decided to target America’s sports, what would be the result?

How would this affect our society and the future of sporting events?

That would be the dumbest thing they could ever do. Not only would it piss off the American people in general, think about the odds makers in Las Vegas! I’m mean it’s one thing to have Homeland Security and the US military after you, but the Mafia too? No, no, no. Not a good idea!
