as my peers indicated, you should ask the different professors of the courses required for the degree,
what books they require. Get those from your library. IF they focus on retailing, you have
a good approach going. IF they have no class in sales or in merchandising, I would not
bother.

Also, consider this instead--[since I was a college teacher]--
take a degree in business. And work with your counselor to satisfy your college's rules
on classes and units. Then, "negotiate" so that again,
merchandising, retailing, sales, management, location analysis, finance, are all classes
you can take towards your "general" -?? business degree.

IF you give me the name of your intended university, I bet I can study their
curriculum to decide if they will have enough for you.

OR, it might be better for you to attend a different university since you ALREADY KNOW
what you want to do with the degree!!!!

From the universities I know that offer this degree, it certainly couldn't hurt. But, if I remember correctly the course requirements. there was not much in the way of design & manufacture for clothing lines. It was more about sourcing wholesale and retail management in addition to basic business courses. You should see if there is a way to minor in fashion design or do a custom major of fashion design combined with retail and consumer science.

I would recommend, in addition to your school work, getting a job with a retail store to learn the ropes first hand. There is a lot to business that can't be learned in the classroom or in books. There is nothing like real experience to know what people like what they don't and how they behave when they're in a shop. I've known plenty of people with successful retail businesses who have never attended university. But, if you plan on working for another company at any point in your career, having your degree will be necessary to advancement.

If you have the chance to go to university, take it! There are always benefits to having the degree.

Best of luck to you!!!
